Sporting names need a date

Relocations and renamings make time part of the answer.

Use a named season

An undated list of teams can be misleading after a move or a new franchise name. Our launch sports questions use a dated source snapshot, and the question boundary states that scope.

An older name may be historically correct without being the accepted name for the requested season. The distinction is about the prompt, not about whether the earlier team existed.

Avoid loose equivalence

A franchise’s history can span cities and names, but those labels do not always work as interchangeable answers. Read whether the question asks for a current-season team or a historical franchise.

Reviewed aliases mainly cover spelling and clearly equivalent short names. They should not erase a date restriction. A former city name is not automatically treated as a harmless spelling variant.

Keep your notes maintainable

Put source and season beside each league list. That makes later checking easier and prevents a stale reference from appearing current.

If you spot a changed name in the game, report the public prompt with an official source. Versioned bank updates can correct future games while preserving the rules of an already-started session.
