Team, player, or competition?

Get the level of the sporting question right before you think of a name.

Choose the right level

A league contains teams, teams have players, and a competition awards results. These levels are connected but not interchangeable.

The launch sports bank focuses on professional team names and league groupings. Prompts specify the relevant league and snapshot season. Naming a player from a valid team does not answer a team-name question.

Keep the location and nickname together

A team’s location name and nickname are useful paired cues. Full team names are safest, while unambiguous reviewed nicknames and abbreviations may also be accepted.

The same nickname can occur in several sports. The prompt’s league narrows the category, but it is still good practice to recall the full name before submitting a short version.

Check rather than assume

A familiar city can have several teams, and a franchise can relocate or change its name. A dated source is essential for season-specific questions.

Do not infer conference or division purely from geography. Sporting organizations choose these groups, and their official directory is the source to check.
